Christmas Was Late This Year!!
So I bought myself/my business a small scanner that copies prints, film, slides and who knows what else and makes digital copies!!! I bought this two Christmases ago and never opened it (instead, I moved all over the world!!!) Never opened it, until TODAY!! I already scanned some old high school photos and am excited to go through them, maybe even post a few!!
I am sure that my young friends do not understand the excitement that is stirred by such a tiny little machine. They don't know what life was like before digital pocket cameras and at home printers, if they ever print; as they can now take a picture, load it to a website, monitor it, track it, see how many people look at it and never once actually hold a hard copy of it!!!
Kids these days!!! hahahah!
I am, honestly, glad that we had film and prints... instead of these new fandangled digital albums; that way I can enjoy the proof of my partying years without having friends/exes/enemies posting them all over the interwebbing world, for all to see!!
A sneak peak snack, for those of you that take the time to read my bloggery!!

Spring Cleaning
So, today is Day 1 of spring cleaning- My Gut!!! For the first two days it is liquefied fruit and veggie drinks, some protein drink and if I work out I win myself a smoothie!! WOOT WOOT.. still might not be motivation enough for me!!
Here's my problem: the shakes are really filling: an apple, cucumber, spinach, kale, pineapple... It has taken me about an hour just to drink half. I am supposed to make another one to drink for lunch and dinner, I might just have to skip one during the day. It's just too much for me, right now... Wait until tomorrow night.. I'll be dancing around the house screaming "get in my belly" to random nick knacks, that I see as food items, in my delusional state of hunger.

Beans Beans, the more you...
...see, the more you check off of your bucket list!!
I know, I know... the bean, seriously- your bucket list? Yes, that was on my list.
Key word "was," as I was able to check that off of my list in April!! So upon moving back to the US of A, I picked up my car and dog, in Maryland, and drove west! I have some old roommates in the Chicago area (all from different stages in life and none of them friends.)
Tara spent the day with me and we went to Navy Pier, walked among the giant polish people with no arms or heads and made our way to the bean!! After that it was really just fun to see whatever else was around!

Check it Out!!
A great opportunity to help and encourage those in Haiti!!
We went to Cheeky Monk for Mother's Day lunch! It was a great; I of course, couldn't drink anything. I was super impressed with the menu, the beer menu- especially!!
And don't forget to regularly check out Apparent Project! A movement in self sustaining skills for Haitians!

A Read-y Friday
There were some not so classy items I could post today... but I'll try to keep it clean!
~Totally worth the short read on God and Truth!
~I am a history lover and political watcher... as it becomes history, eventually. But I hate political seasons. Crazy Presidential elections drive me up a wall. I want to throw things and pull my hair out simultaneously... Yes, I realize that this is neither a necessary or productive, and slightly unhealthy, reaction but still... MORONS. I feel like our country is run by morons and that they are supported by even bigger morons, not party specific. I read articles, get annoyed and then read comments people make and I want to reach through my computer to flick them in the ear or smack 'em upside the head. MORONS.
So, then I read this today... and after reading articles about homelessness, orphans, youth "in the system," adoption stories, rescue stories, stories about true heroes, the welcome home local soldiers had last night after a year long deployment. I see that people were willing to pay $40,000 PER PERSON, to help raise $15 MILLION for campaign efforts on behalf of President Obama. AHHHHH. This breaks my heart. Do they realize where this money could be better spent; how this money could change and save lives, if it weren't wasted on ad campaigns. How that much money could change our nation. So they don't mind paying that much for a plated dinner on a basketball court, strung with lit lanterns, but they hide money in offshore accounts, properties outside of America and so on and so forth... put your money where your mouth is, instead of into the politicians' pockets.
~I plugged this video on my facebook page. The beauty and power of music, from a veteran.
~This has been heavy on my heart today. Somehow, some one decided that child porn is legal if you just look at it... as long as you don't print it, download it, own it, blah blah blah, then it's totes fine. I am disturbed by this and my heart is heavy with sadness. And somehow, everyone is ignoring this while they focus on a nursing three year old on Time magazine (I have my opinions about that too... maybe another time, another blog) and potential presidents that bullied in their youth... blah blah blah.

~I did add some new music to my I Love Music page! Tell me if you spot them!! hahahaha

For Pete's Sake; well for all the Youth, not just Pete!
Many of you know that I have most recently, for three years, been working, specifically, in youth ministry, through an organization that works directly with military teens!! I have been working in youth ministry for over a decade though, from helping lead church youth groups to being an outreach ministry volunteer.
~I found this article today and wanted to share it, with my fellow "youth workers" and other adults!!! Great approach to ministry and a necessary approach; this is how we try to do ministry on installations getting other adults involved!!
~Another article, found in the children's ministry resource area, describes how we need to stop with the presentation of the Gospel that uses the phrase, "ask Jesus into your heart" and we need to focus the Gospel story back on the power of God and all that He does in the relationship... His grace, His sacrifice, His call to us.
"In the Scriptures, our God not only waits and watches, but he actively saves (Ephesians 2; John 14). We can trust God to work in the hearts of his children to bring them to himself through faith, in his time and in his ways. Our responsibility is to faithfully tell the gospel to them and leave the results to the Lord (John 1:12-13)..."

The author also states "Without true repentance and faith, there is not a true conversion.." He doesn't want teachers and leaders to give the impression that if you say the sinner's prayer all's good and all's right with your new "self." We need to be in a constant relationship with God and in true repentance; and if we stray and choose sin, we realize we have to make the effort to turn from our sin and seek God.
I pray and hope that, in my time with teens, they were hearing me tell them of God's power and grace.
A few Interwebbery Linkages
My slow going Friday morning has allowed for some great interwebbery browsing and some wonderfully inspiring, or enlightening, discoveries and challenges!!!
~ I always try to carry a snack in my purse, sometimes I get a little sugar, or protein, dizzy spell and like to know I've got a reserve energy boost at my disposal. Living in Alaska and the crazy amount of homeless often led to me handing it out before I could ever use it or need it, and I always realized even if I got a little dizzy or a little irritable, I could always run into the store or head home. I kept this up in Europe as well; on my last trip, before heading back stateside, I honestly don't know if I ate any of the snacks that I packed in my bag in the mornings. Here is a great blog post about one families approach to loving strangers, no strings attached, no expectations!! Plus One
~ I feel horrible admitting to this, and it isn't an act of judgement, or so I tell myself, but when you live a life in service of God and are indirectly made ("made" is too harsh a word, "required" is not much better; yes, as staff, I should and needed to attend multiples services to connect with students and their families, so some words seem to harsh to use here... but I needed to use a word and until I learn a better one... that is what you are getting!!!!) to attend multiple services. In this way we could connect with families and students, share with the congregations and help give vision for ecumenical ministry. In attending all those services and different worship styles I found I enjoy certain worship and teaching styles over others. So back to feeling horrible about something... I got into the habit of counting during the services, counting a number of things (punny?). I would count how many times we were referenced actually Bible verses, how many times the same childhood story was told, how many times Jesus and/or God was mentioned (I mean, we were in Church folks). I was SOOOO relieved to read about Frank Viola doing this same thing to others!! He says,

message or sermon, and so often, the number is astounding. Sometimes
He’s never mentioned in 60 minutes of preaching. Compare that over
against how many times Paul of Tarsus mentioned the Lord Jesus in his
letters. It’s mind-boggling."

42 point hike
I am a clutz/klutz, you pick. When I lived in Alaska and hiked, and backcountried, a ton, I would fall... It is really ridiculous. My friends found it fairly entertaining and and came up with a fall point system.
1 pnts~ foot slide but no fall
2 pnts~ foot slide fumble/arm flail
3 pnts~ one hand touch down forward
4 pnts~ single knee bow
5 pnts~ knee bow + 1 hand touch
6 pnts~ one hand touch back/semi crab crawl
7 pnts~ two hands touch either front or back
8 pnts~ butt contact
9 pnts~ butt contact + hand touch
needless to say, numbers add up quickly the longer the hike, the higher the grade incline and so on... add ice and you rack up points faster than... well, really fast!!
Yesterday I went hiking. I was by myself but I kept a tally anyhow. It helps me decide how vigorous a trail is and how to rate it, on a personal ability scale. I had a couple of foot slides with no fall (3), a foot slide with arm flail (2) and a full on butt to ground contact + hand at back (9)!!
The problem with this fall was that I was coming off of a wooden plank step; so as I tried to "save myself" (I don't know why we instinctively try to stop a fall by putting our hand out.... never a good outcome) my arm was basically yanked up, as my butt hit the ground below. As I could not lay on my entire right side last night, can't use my wrist comfortably to adjust, type, blah blah blah, this morning, and can't even use my elbow as leverage to adjust sitting positions as I makes my back hurt, I might would triple the earned fall points for this trail and put it on the "USE EXTREME CAUTION" list.
But it is a realllllly beautiful hike; so, of course, I will do the hike again! I now know I MUST go slow and PAY ATTENTION, using extreme caution. And I know that thanks to my "fall point system." Thanks friends, for making a "make fun of Cadena tool" into a quite helpful and good "assessment of terrain tool!!!"
You are welcome everyone!

Hmmm... Not For Intended Use
Lucky and I play soccer with a dumbbell. A plastic, squeaky dumbbell. It doesn't make sense to me, but hey, if that's how she wants to play, I'll do it... This is the longest living squeaky toy, plastic or otherwise, in our possession. Normally, a Lucky toy survives minutes, if not seconds!
YA, I know, we're pretty much the coolest pair since: peas and carrots or peanut butter and jelly or apples and bananas!!!
She does tricks like a pro. She kicks it between all four legs!
she even guards it.
then I throw her off with my mad skills! flipping up and over her!

The Incline 2012
Now that I am back I can reacquaint myself with the INCLINE!! Ahhh, I know; the steps, the altitude... egads!!! I will only write of my trek this once; that is, until I am proud of my performance!!SO, for attempt one....proud of feat, yes. Proud of performance, nay (as in American no, not Korean yes). My lungs have long since lost their ability to perform at these altitudes and at this level of aerobics... SO,
The steps... painfully placed for short people! And directly facing the sun throughout the day with little shade to offer.
But it does offer a pretty spectacular view; if you are not scared of heights and can turn around to see said view!
And I take the easy, much more enjoyable Barr Trail back down! This is the kind of outdoor activity I am used to! Trails and views and falling on my bum repeatedly because I am a clutz!
What I was seeing after about the 12th step up, and all the way down!!!! I kid, I kid!! But seriously, spots, spinning trees ... is that NOT supposed to happen!!?!?

Myspace, Old School?
I know, I know... Myspace, pshhht, Myspace is old school. No one uses Myspace anymore...
Ahem, let me introduce you to the easiest way to find new music, next to Pandora's random pull into your station. Some may feel Myspace is even better, since you can control types/genres/signed status all without ads!!
Ironically, with my line of work, and the reality of my age smack dab in my face daily, some friends might be too young to even know Myspace!! HAHAHA!!
Today I am enjoying an ENTIRE album for FREE!! The cool bands put up lots of stuff for free!!!
Here is the link to Passion: Hymns Ancient and Modern, a great mix of artists and songs! I appreciate hymns in the depth of my soul and love when people recreate wonderful songs; don't get me wrong, I do love it old school but it's fun to hear new voices and instruments mixing with classic scripture based worship!!!

I Had an Easier Time in Korea
I was sooo hesitant to go to the movie theater, when I first moved to Korea. The thought of it overwhelmed me, but everyone in my life said it was easy and totally worth it!
It was, you just had to choose one you would understand, hope the cashier understood the English title, find the right floor, yes, mega plexes are vertical, not horizontal there, and get the right theater! EASY PEASY!!
I went to a movie with some friends last night. We all went up, bought our tickets and then slowly separated, some went straight to the theater, two of us went for coffee and so on...
SO, I couldn't order the coffee for another person~ they didn't have the right milk and my text to her wouldn't go through, I finally got my coffee, the wrong coffee, then as the two of us went to our theater my fellow coffee fiend thought it wise to go to the restroom...
So I walk down to theater 5... Upon entering I can't see my friends, so I walk most of the way up and just sit. A couple of big events into the plot, actually texting one of my friends the message, "Is he hunting?" trying to see if we were, in fact, all in this theater and I am really just blind as a bat. I realize that the movie HAD to be further in than expected and was most likely halfway over and my coffee fiend friend had not come in yet... SO I start texting like a mad woman, feeling a fool for being in the wrong theater. I get one from coffee fiend friend saying she is next door at the hunger games that had not started yet. I exit theater 5 turn into theater 4 and proceed to NOT find my friend. Suddenly I get an onslaught of texts about how the showing we wanted was in theater 17 and that it was just starting. So I have to walk the entire distance of the mega plex, explain to the ticket guard that I was supposed to be in theater 17. I finally made it to the right theater and the last seat next to my friends.
How did this happen. I mean EVERYONE speaks English here; I had an easier time in Korea, GEEESH!!!

The Ebbing Tide of My Walk
My faith- it's sketchy looking, no doubt, especially to those that KNOW me. I don't do everything perfectly, I disappoint myself and in turn, I am sure, I disappoint others and God. The best thing about faith, I know God loves me even when I make choices I'm not proud of, that He pours His grace out on me with each new day and that all He really wants is for me to come to Him. He desires my heart, He created me and He knows me... He wants me to know HIM!!!
My faith is like the ebbing tide... I realize that I run to Him in cycles, I am consistent and then life gets easy to manage on my own and slowly come to him less and less.
I pray that I become more still and more consistent in my pursuit of knowing my creator.
Here is another blogger's look at her walk with God. Watering the Peace Lily
"I don’t know why, but I’ve had a lot of those moments lately. Sometimes my soul feels wilted, prostrate on the ground, starved for Grace."

Some Great Articles
I promise you, I am not seeking these sites, articles or topics out... but I seem to be coming across hard life issues readily these past two days.
So maybe it is a message to share them with people in my life~
I know people are hurting, healing and looking... SO, feel free to read, tag, comment on or, otherwise, ignore the links below!!!
DEPRESSION
This is one woman's account of her depression and subsequent dealings with
Prodigal Magazine
I appreciated her acknowledgement of it being an illness not just a mood, "This isn’t a sin–this depression. This isn’t a flaw in your design or a mistake. Depression is an illness. It is rampant, especially among women and if ever there were something that needs to be brought to the Light, it is this."
and ever more importantly she calls us, those of faith, out "In many Christian circles, “depression” is a dirty word." I am afraid this is true, not just in the church. Many people don't want to acknowledge what they perceive as weakness. But it is so much more than that. I hope that many of the people in my life, dealing with depression, or recovering from, will find hope in her message and camaraderie in her honesty account.
SEX
I work with teens and boy do they flit around relationships faster than.... well I can't think of anything remotely as speedy as they are!!! So often they leap into these relationships and dive head first into the nitty gritty and dirty world of casual sex. Here is an article about the attack that Tim Tebow has been experiencing for his honesty regarding his single status and virgin state... ("virgin alert. virgin alert." Spaceballs' reference anyone!!!) The Temptation of Tim Tebow
The line that resonated with me was regarding lookers on that mock his choice, "those who deeply underestimate the power of sex." It is powerful, emotionally, spiritually, physically... There is a depth to sex that our young people are glazing over, ignoring, pushing deep down inside; the issue is that no one is telling them that "it is OK," "there is no hurry," and "it really should matter."
ABUSE
Men and women, young and old, deal with abuse. Physical, emotional and sexual abuse runs rampant in our world. People are quick to discuss criminal acts we have come to expect but it is much harder to get a group to talk about abuse. It is too taboo to admit to having experienced it and heaven forbid somebody admit to committing it. But the article I am linking below has the story of someone who, in adulthood, finally deals with and heals from years of sexual abuse. You probably didn't even notice you read "men" at the start of the paragraph. But it is true. Check out Chris' processing and healing. "Life After Sexual Abuse."
OK, that's all for now folks... I will continue to share articles or sites as I run across them!!

Turn the Page, Start a New Chapter, Close the Book, A Season of Life
It feels crazy to delete my pages that talked about the ministry, how to support me, what my work would be like, areas for prayer...
I am not sure which cliche I should refer to but I will just let you say, "It really is like (read entry title and pick your favorite; comment below with your vote)." It has been a crazy and incredible three + years of serving God, Military families and young people.
I could not have asked for a better way to spend my days and I am so thankful that I had the opportunity!!

My Friend's Daily Photo Blog
I really enjoy this blog... an old friend, actually a roommate from my yesteryear...
She posts a photo a day, you then get to rate it into one of three categories, fun, provoking, artistic, and you can also leave comments! The photos are great and are inspired from everything... so it's not like everyday is a bird or something!
Just make sure you stop by and look around!

A Friend's Entry
I wanted to share my friends blog entry on a day spent with people and how she saw the Holy Spirit at work around her, even on a Sunday, "during church time!"
Noel's~ Just Following Jesus
"Being a follower of Jesus is not easy, and we must remember that following Jesus is a call beyond the doors of the Church building."
She also includes some reflection questions and a prayer!
I hope that you find it helpful and encouraging!
